Courage and Servant Leadership: Examples of True Character
Updated: May 21
"A person of great character does not care about being the leader but instead cares about the task, the dream, and the destination for the people they influence." - Vince Magana
There are few things more admirable than a person of great character. These individuals inspire us to be better versions of ourselves, look beyond our self-interests, and strive toward a common goal. They may not hold positions of power or authority, but their impact on those around them is immeasurable. In this short article, we'll explore the qualities of a person with great character. And I'll share some stories of individuals who embody these qualities.

Humility is the first quality that comes to mind when I think of a person of great character. These individuals are not motivated by personal ambition or the pursuit of fame and fortune. Instead, they focus on the work and the people they serve. One example of such a person is an individual I now call a friend, Larrisa. She is a nurse who worked at a local hospital when my father had cancer. The most caring nurse I've ever known. Despite her decades of experience and expertise, she never boasts or seeks recognition for her work. Instead, she quietly does her business, offering comfort and care to those most needing it. Her humility is contagious, reminding me that true greatness is measured by our impact on others, not by the accolades we receive.
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3)
Integrity is another meaningful quality of a person of great character. These individuals have a solid moral compass and always act following their beliefs and values. They are honest, transparent, and consistent in their words and actions. I have a father figure in my life named Jack, who embodies this amazing quality. He was a successful entrepreneur who had built his business from the ground up. He never compromised his principles or values for personal gain despite his success. He treated his employees with respect and kindness. He was consistently honest and straightforward in his dealings with clients and partners. His integrity earned him the trust and admiration of everyone he worked with, inspiring us to strive toward a higher standard of ethics and professionalism.
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out. (Proverbs 10:9)
Empathy is a third quality of a person of great character. These individuals can understand and share the feelings of others. They are compassionate, caring, and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. A friend of mine is a social worker who works with underprivileged children and families. His job is incredibly challenging, but he approaches it sincerely with empathy and compassion. He takes the time to listen to his client's stories, understands their struggles, and offers them the support and resources they need to overcome their challenges. His empathy transforms those he works with, reminding us of the power of human connection and kindness.
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. (Romans 12:15)
Resilience is another essential quality of extraordinary character. These individuals can bounce back from setbacks and overcome obstacles. They do not give up quickly and are always willing to put in the hard work required to achieve their goals. One example of such a person is an employee of mine, Robert. Robert is a father of six who has faced numerous challenges throughout his life, including financial struggles and family issues growing up. Despite these obstacles, she never lost sight of his goals or determination to provide a better life for himself and his family. His resilience is a source of inspiration for everyone who knows him. It reminds us that we can overcome even the most difficult of circumstances.
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12)
Courage is another key quality of an amazing character. These individuals are willing to take risks and stand up for their beliefs, even when it is not popular or easy. They are not afraid to speak their minds and challenge the status quo. One example of such a person was a young girl I met years ago at church. Sarah was a victim of bullying throughout Jr. high and high school. But instead of suffering in silence, she took the matter to God through prayer. Sarah took Joshua 1:9 to heart and dared to speak up and stand up against her bullies. She formed an anti-bullying club at her school and worked tirelessly to raise awareness. Her courage inspired other students to join her cause, and together they made a real difference in the lives of many students who were being bullied. She even found that several bullies in her high school changed their ways and joined her group. Sarah's story reminds us that it takes courage to stand up against injustice and that one can make a difference when one dares to speak up.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)
Finally, a person of great character is a servant leader. They do not seek power or authority for their own benefit but instead focus on serving others and helping them to reach their full potential. They lead by example, setting a high standard of excellence and integrity for others. One example of such a person is Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was a political and spiritual leader in India who fought for independence and civil rights through nonviolent resistance. He dedicated his life to serving others, inspiring millions of people worldwide to join him in his quest for justice and equality.
But among you, it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant. (Mark 10:43)
LET'S WRAP IT UP
What have we learned about ourselves and the person we want to be? An individual of great character possesses humility, integrity, empathy, resilience, courage, and servant leadership qualities. They may not hold positions of power or authority, but their impact on those around them is immeasurable. We can all learn from the examples of these individuals and strive to embody their qualities in our own lives.
